It is the question we hear more than any other, in emails, in Instagram DMs, and from people standing in our doorway: "Are your pottery classes beginner-friendly? I have never touched clay before. Can I really do this?"

Yes. You really can. Every class at Mud Hut Pottery Studio in Riverside, CA is built for beginners. Not adapted for beginners, not tolerant of beginners. Built for them. Most of the people sitting at a wheel or a handbuilding table in our studio on any given day are trying pottery for the very first time.

You do not need to be creative. You need to show up.

Every class is led by an instructor who walks you through each step. If the wheel feels intimidating, start with handbuilding. Our Coffee and Clay class is one of the most beginner-friendly pottery experiences in the Inland Empire. You sculpt your own mug from slab clay while sipping a specialty drink from Clayfeine, our in-studio coffee cart. It is relaxed, it is less messy than the wheel, and you leave with a mug you made yourself.

One of our students, Christine, put it this way after her first visit: it was her first time working with clay, and her instructor took her time on each step and made it easy. That is the experience we build every class around.

If you want to try the wheel, our 90-minute Beginner Pottery Wheel class runs seven days a week for $50 per person. Prefer a weeknight? Happy Hour Pottery Wheel is $40, Monday through Thursday. Bringing kids? Our Mixed Age Family Handbuilding class welcomes ages 5 through adult. Planning a night out? Date Night gives couples a choice of wheel or handbuilding for $100 per couple.

What happens if my piece comes out wobbly?

Then it comes out wobbly, and you will probably love it anyway. The lopsided bowl is a rite of passage. Your piece gets fired in our kiln, glazed, and ready for pickup in 4 to 6 weeks, and we promise the handmade imperfection is exactly what makes it yours. Perfection was never the point. Making something real with your own hands is.
