Why Are There No Pottery Wheels in Our Private Event Studio?
This is a typical gathering in Mud Hut Pottery Studio’s private event studio.
People ask us this all the time. You booked a pottery party, so where are the wheels?
The answer says a lot about what actually makes a celebration work, and once you hear it, most people are glad we made the choice we did.
The wheel is a solo experience, by design
Watch someone throw on the pottery wheel and you will notice something: they go quiet. Their shoulders drop, their eyes lock onto the clay, and the rest of the room disappears.
That is not a lack of enthusiasm. It is the wheel doing exactly what it does best. Throwing requires constant attention and steady hands, and the moment you look up to answer a question, your piece goes lopsided. It is mesmerizing, and it is one of the reasons people fall in love with it.
But mesmerizing is not the goal at a birthday party.
A celebration needs a table, not a row of wheels
Hand-building and painting your own pottery work at a completely different pace. Everyone sits together around one large communal table. Hands stay busy while conversation flows, and there is room to laugh, catch up, pass the cake around, and actually enjoy each other's company.
Your guests came to be together. Hand-building and painting let that happen, and everyone still creates a memory and keepsake they will have for years to come.
There is a practical bonus too. Both options are far less messy, which keeps our event studio the clean, beautiful space you want in your photos.
We can also host a much bigger group
Our pottery wheel classes cap at 10 people, because that is how many wheels we have and how much individual attention each student needs.
Our private event studio at 9950 Indiana Ave, Unit 12 is 1,500 square feet and holds up to 30 guests for paint your own pottery. Hand-building events work best up to 20, and if your group is larger than that, email us, and we will figure it out together.
That difference matters when you are planning a team-building day, a milestone birthday, or a bridal shower. Thirty people around a table beats ten people who cannot hear each other over the wheels.
And you can bring the food
This is the part people are most surprised by. In our private event studio, you are welcome to bring food, cake, and drinks, and outside alcohol is welcome for guests 21 and over.
We cannot do that in our main pottery studio. Food and drinks are not allowed in there, for the same reason you would not eat lunch in a woodshop. So if your gathering involves a cake, the event studio is the answer.

You have options. You can book up to 10 spots in one of our regular wheel classes, which take place in the main studio. Some groups pair that with the event studio, so the class happens on the wheels and the celebration with food and cake happens next door. Paint Your Own Pottery is $400 for up to 10 guests, plus $40 for each additional guest, and runs 2 hours. Both include an instructor and the full private studio.
